TUTORIAL NUMBER FIVE

If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned below or think that your samba music making might be the root of a strain or injury of any kind please discuss it with the leader of the group before continuing with your music making.

The first signs of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) typically include pain, tenderness, throbbing, tingling, numbness, or stiffness in the muscles and joints of the hands, wrists, arms, or shoulders. These early symptoms are often intermittent, appearing during specific repetitive tasks and easing with rest.

Key Early Symptoms of RSI

Pain and Discomfort
A dull ache, soreness, or throbbing in the affected area, particularly during or after activity.

Tingling and Numbness
A "pins and needles" sensation (paresthesia) in the hands or arms.

Stiffness or Tenderness
Limited range of motion in joints like the wrist or elbow.

Weakness
A noticeable loss of grip strength or reduced strength in the hands/fingers.

Sensitivity to Temperature
Sensitivity to cold or heat in the limbs.

Characteristics of Initial Stages

Activity-Specific
Symptoms often appear only when performing the specific repetitive action (e.g., typing, scanning, assembly work, intensive drumming).

Reversible
In the early "Type 1" or "mild" stage, pain usually disappears when you stop the aggravating activity and rest, potentially taking a few hours or days to settle.

Delayed Appearance
Symptoms may not occur while doing the task, but rather appear afterward.

If left untreated, these early signs can progress from lasting a few weeks to chronic, long-term conditions. It is important to address these symptoms early by reviewing your work or recreational routines and introducing regular breaks and exercise.
